Baseball Drops Second Game to West Virginia

The Bowling Green baseball team (4-9-1) dropped the second game of a doubleheader to the West Virginia Mountaineers by a score of 8-1.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Corey Loomis lined his first homerun of the season to centerfield. WVU clawed back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center by Kevin Olkowski. Three more Mountaineers crossed the plate in the second inning thanks to an RBI groundout by Mike Frownfelter, an RBI single by Olkowski and a Tim McCabe RBI single. WVU got two more in the fourth on Olkowski second run scoring sac fly of the game and an RBI single by Eddie Weightman. The Mountaineers got single runs in both the seventh and eight innings when Weightman stole home in the seventh and McCabe picked up his second RBI of the game with a double down the left field line.
For the Brown and Orange, Joe Cheney was handed his second lost of the season after giving up six runs, only three earned, in three and a third innings. Brett Baumgartner followed with two and two thirds perfect innings before Doug Flere and Aaron Nease each gave up single runs in their respective innings of work. The Mountaineers got seven innings of one run, four hit baseball from Jim Kirkland to give him his second win of 2000. David Naust followed with two perfect innings of relief.
The Falcons return to action this weekend with the University at Buffalo coming to town for a three-game non-league series. Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are slated to begin at 1 p.m. at BGSU's Steller Field.
