BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green softball team opened the Mid-American Conference schedule with a 5-0 win over Western Michigan Friday (March 31) afternoon. The game, BGSU's home opener, was played at the BGSU Softball Field.
Sophomore Jessie Milosek fired a complete-game one-hitter as the Falcons moved to 13-6 overall and 1-0 in MAC action. WMU (4-14, 0-1) got only a third-inning single by Angie Fiero.
BGSU got all the runs Milosek would need in the second inning, scoring twice. With one out, senior Erin Zwinck singled, and junior Nikki Rouhana sacrificed her to second base. Junior Lynsey Ebel, who was 3-for-3 in the contest, singled to score Zwinck. Then, freshman Libby Voshell drove a ball to the base of the wall in dead-center field for a double to plate Ebel.
The Falcons scored a run in the fifth. After singles by freshman Kandice Machain and junior Angie Domschot, senior Carmen Hitterdal lined to WMU third baseman Nicole Drabecki. Drabecki threw the ball away, however, trying to double Machain off second base, and the runners moved to second and third. Senior Colleen Bates grounded out, but knocked the ball out of the first baseman's glove, allowing Machain to score.
In the sixth inning, Rouhana and Ebel led off with singles, putting runners at first and third. Morgan LaNicca pinch-ran for Ebel, but the next two Falcon batters were retired. Angie Domschot came to the plate, and lined a single to right-center. She advanced all the way to third base when the ball went through the WMU centerfielder's legs, as both Rouhana and LaNicca scored.
The Falcons pounded out 10 hits in the win. In addition to Ebel's three safeties, both Angie Domschot and Rouhana had two hits each.
