Kalamazoo, MI -
The Bowling Green State University baseball team won the first game of Monday's doubleheader at Western Michigan, 4-2, behind the pitching of junior Tony Fontana.
Fontana retired the first 11 Bronco batters before a two-out walk preceded a home run by WMU catcher Joe Seestadt in the fourth inning. Fontana struck out eight and walked two as he retired 21 of the 25 batters he faced.
The Falcons scored twice in the second inning when Alan Gilhousen led off with a walk and moved to second on Sean Ryan's single to right field. Lee Morrison's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Following a strike out, Brad Simon laced a double to left field scoring both Gilhousen and Ryan.
BG went ahead 3-0 in the fourth inning when Corey Loomis reached on a one-out walk and moved to second when Sean Ryan was thrown out trying to steal third. Loomis came around to score from second on an error by Bronco catcher Joe Seestadt.
The Falcons scored their final run in the fifth inning when Len Elias doubled to left center and was sacrificed to third by Aric Christman. Kenny Burdine's sacrifice fly to right field plated Elias.
The win was BG's 400th Mid-American Conference regular-season victory.
