Bowling Green, OH -
The Bowling Green State University baseball team won for the seventh time in the last eight games posting a 3-2 11 inning triumph over visiting Cleveland State Tuesday at Steller Field.
Senior Matt Best singled down the right field line with the bases loaded and one out to score Nick Schmidt.
BG grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schmidt had a lead off walk and was sacrificed to second by Justin Haire. A walk to Shaun Rice and a single to right field by Corey Loomis loaded the bases. CSU first baseman Adam Miller's error allowed Schmidt to score, while Len Elias' sacrifice fly plated Rice.
The Vikings tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth inning. After retiring the first batter, Kevin Stock walked Jamie Murphy and Matt Smith singled to center. Ryan Streb came in to pitch, and after a passed ball, he surrendered a two-run single to right center by Mike Lehman. Streb then retired the next two batters.
Bowling Green's winning rally started when lead off batter Nick Schmidt doubled over the head of CSU left fielder Ernest Simpson. Schmidt then moved to third on a passed ball. Brad Simon drew a walk, and Alan Gilhousen was intentionally walked to load the bases. Following a strike out, Best hit a 1-0 pitch down the right field line that landed just in fair territory and out of the reach of CSU right fielder Matt Smith.
Joe Cheney started on the mound for BG and allowed four hits in five innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Deryck Griffith pitched two innings and did not allow a hit. Kevin Stock allowed both CSU runs (one earned) in 0.1 innings. Ryan Streb hurled 1.2 innings and struck out three, while Mike Muzi garnered his second win of the year by tossing the final two innings. Muzi allowed two hits, while striking out two.
The Falcons improve to 14-12-1 overall, while the Vikings fall to 9-16. BG will play at Notre Dame on Wednesday in a contest scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Eastern.
