Kalamazoo, MI -
The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed its doubleheader sweep Monday at Western Michigan with an 8-5 triumph in the second game.
Bowling Green improves to 13-12-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos fall to 13-15 overall and 2-6 in the MAC. BG is over .500 for the first time this season after starting the year 0-5-1.
The Falcons scored twice in the opening inning as Aric Christman singled and Len Elias walked. After a groundout moved up each runner, Sean Ryan's double down the left field line plated Christman and Elias.
After the Broncos had tied the score with a pair of runs in their half of the first inning, BG scored three times in the second. Matt Marcum led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Matt Best. Nick Elrod followed with his second home run of the season. Aric Christman then had an infield single, stole second and scored on a Len Elias single to right field.
BG scored once in the third inning when Kenny Burdine had a two-out infield single. He moved to third on a Bronco error and scored on another Bronco miscue.
After WMU had narrowed BG's lead to two at 6-4, the Falcons scored twice in the seventh inning. Sean Ryan began the frame by hitting a single to left field. Lee Morrison sacrificed Ryan to second and a groundout moved Ryan to third, where he scored on a Matt Marcum single.
Doug Flere started for BG and left after walking the opening batter in the second inning. Craig Menke pitched the final six innings for his third victory of the year. Flere allowed three runs on three hits and two walks, while Menke allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Bowling Green is scheduled to entertain Cleveland State on Tuesday at Steller Field with game time slated for 3 p.m.
