BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
Visiting Ohio State scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back en route to a 6-2 win over the Bowling Green softball team Tuesday afternoon (April 11). The non-conference game was played at the BGSU Softball Field.
OSU (18-15 overall) added three more runs, all unearned, in the top of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. The host Falcons (17-9) scored a pair of runs, also unearned, in the bottom of that frame. All eight runs in the game were of the unearned variety.
The Buckeyes scored three times in the first half-inning off of BG starter McKenna Houle. Houle, after walking Anna Smith to start the game, got Holly English to hit a sharp grounder to third. BG third baseman Erin Zwinck's throw sailed into right field, allowing the runners to take second and third base. Then, the next batter, Jennifer Link, reached on a fielder's choice. Link's bunt attempt was fielded by Zwinck, who was unable to make a play. Smith scored on the sacrifice.
After a double steal again put runners on second and third, Houle struck out Stacy Roth for the first out of the game. Renee Weigel reached on a fielder's choice, as Houle looked the runner back to third. With the bases loaded, Rogeanna Hottinger grounded to second baseman Angie Domschot, who forced English at home for the second out, with the bases remaining loaded. But, Houle walked Sarah West to force home another run, then surrendered a Kristina Himes single to plate a third. She fanned Chrissy Fowler, the ninth hitter of the inning, but the damage had been done. The three OSU runs came on just one hit.
In the fifth inning, the Buckeyes scored three more times. After Houle retired the first two batters of the inning, Hottinger reached on a Falcon error. Then, a West single was followed by another BG error, a Fowler infield hit and a steal of home by Himes.
The Brown and Orange scored twice in the fifth off reliever Katie Chain. Lynsey Ebel reached second base on an error to begin the inning, then Libby Voshell reached on an infield hit, with pinch-runner Morgan LaNicca holding at second. Jess Jenkins pinch-ran for Voshell, and Kandice Machain singled to center field, scoring LaNicca and sending Jenkins to third. Angie Domschot flied out, but Jenkins took third on the play. Jenkins eventually scored when Carmen Hitterdal reached on another Buckeye error. But, the Falcons could draw no closer.
Toni Hileman, a transfer from Ohio University, got the win for the Buckeyes, while Houle fell to 5-4 on the year with the loss.
The Falcons will head to Dayton for a single game Thursday (April 13), beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Brown and Orange then host Akron for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. Friday's single game will begin at 3:00 p.m., while Saturday's twinbill is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
