Bowling Green, OH -
The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated visiting Marshall, 4-3, in Saturday's first game at Steller Field.
Marshall scored single runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings against Falcon starter Tony Fontana, who went the distance for his fifth complete game of the season. He struck out a career-high 11 batters, while walking three.
BG scored three times in the third inning when Thundering Herd right fielder Jason Brooks dropped Lee Morrison's fly ball with two outs allowing all three runners on base to score.
Marshall tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out solo home run by Matt Eldridge.
BG's winning rally started after the first batter was retired when freshman Corey Loomis singled through the right side. Aric Christman doubled to right field advancing Loomis to third base. Len Elias was intentionally walked before Alan Gilhousen lined out to the pitcher. Sean Ryan then laced a 1-0 pitch through the right side scoring Loomis.
The victory was the 1,200th in Falcon baseball history and improved BG's overall record to 15-13-1 and Mid-American Conference mark to 6-1. Marshall fell to 12-18-1 overall and 1-7 in the MAC.
