The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated visiting Marshall 7-1 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Falcon starting pitcher Joe Cheney went the distance for his first win since March 10. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter while allowing one run on a Jason Ricceri solo home run in the fourth inning.
BG scored four times in the third inning on only two hits. Nick Elrod drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout. Elrod scored on a Marshall fielding error and an Alan Gilhousen single scored Len Elias. Lee Morrison hit a two-run home run, his second in as many games.
The Falcons added their final three runs in the fourth inning. Scott Dukate doubled to begin the inning and moved to third on a Matt Best bunt single. Tim Newell's sacrifice fly scored Dukate. After a fly out, Aric Christman had a bunt single and Len Elias' double to right center scored both Best and Christman.
BG turned three inning ending double plays. The win was the eighth in the last nine games for the Falcons.
BG improves to 17-13-1 overall and 8-1 in the Mid-American Conference while Marshall falls to 12-20-1 overall and 1-9 in the MAC.
