BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green softball team used a pair of six-run innings to record a run-rule win over visiting Miami, 12-1, Tuesday (April 18). The win gave the host Falcons a sweep of the Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the BGSU Softball Field.
The game was called after four-and-a-half innings due to the eight-run "mercy rule." BGSU batted around in two innings, sending 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and 10 more in the third frame.
BGSU freshman McKenna Houle was the beneficiary, earning the win despite surrendering 10 hits. Houle worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning before the Brown and Orange erupted in the bottom of the inning.
Angie Domschot led off that frame by hitting Amber Arnold's first pitch of the game to the wall in left field for a double. Carmen Hitterdal's sacrifice bunt moved Domschot to third, and was the only out the RedHawks would record in the first nine batters.
Senior Colleen Bates followed Hitterdal, and gave Houle all the runs she would need. Bates hit a two-run homer to left, her fourth round-tripper of the season and the 10th of her career. Bates took over the BGSU career lead with a homer in Friday's (April 14) game vs. Akron.
The Falcons (21-11 overall, 6-3 MAC) kept the hits coming, as Renee Rosemeier doubled to chase Miami starter Amber Arnold. Tennille Bishop came on, but could not retire any of the five batters she faced. An Erin Zwinck single was followed by a Nikki Rouhana two-run single. Lynsey Ebel walked, and Jen Domschot singled to plate Rouhana. The runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Libby Voshell singled to score Ebel. Arnold returned to the circle and retired the next two batters, but the damage had been done.
Houle again worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the third inning, as MU left three more runners on base. The RedHawks totalled 11 LOB in just five innings.
In the bottom of the third, the Falcons continued the hit parade. All but one of BG's 13 hits in the game came in either the first (seven) or the third (five).
Ebel and Jen Domschot led off with singles, and Voshell walked to load the bases. Angie Domschot hit into a fielder's choice, as Ebel was forced out at the plate, but Hitterdal singled to score Jen Domschot, and Voshell scored when the MU centerfielder bobbled the ball. Then, Bates walked to load the bases once again.
Abbey Arnold replaced her sister, Amber, at the pitcher's spot, and got Rosemeier to ground out. Angie Domschot scored on that play, however. Then, Zwinck had a two-run single, and wound up on third base herself on an error by the MU rightfielder. She scored on a Rouhana single.
Miami's only run came on a Kristina Mortaloni single in the fourth, which scored Nicki Pelfrey. Both Mortaloni and Pelfrey had two hits for MU in the game, as did Laura Fulton.
For the Falcons, both Domschot twins had two hits, with Jen Domschot going 2-for-2. Zwinck and Rouhana each had multi-hit games as well, with Rouhana picking up three RBI. Bates, Zwinck and Angie Domschot all scored twice, as all nine position starters scored at least one run and had at least one hit.
Houle moved to 7-4 with the victory, and her seasonal ERA now stands at 1.13 on the season. Amber Arnold dropped to 7-9 with the loss. The RedHawks drop to 13-22 overall and 2-7 in MAC play.
Tuesday's two wins enabled BGSU to match the win total for all of last season. The Falcons went 21-27 in 1999, Leigh Ross-Shaw's first year as head coach.
The Falcons will make the short trip north to face #12 Michigan in non-conference action Wednesday (April 19). First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at U-M's Alumni Field.
