ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Eleventh-ranked Michigan scored three times in both the third and sixth innings en route to an 8-0 victory over the Bowling Green softball team. The Tuesday (April 19) non-conference game was held at UM's Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Falcons, now 21-12, managed just two hits off Michigan's Jamie Gillies. The Brown and Orange got a first-inning single from senior C Colleen Bates and a fourth-inning single off the bat of sophomore RF Renee Rosemeier.
U-M got on the board in the first inning. Pam Kosanke drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a two-out single by Marissa Young.
The hosts scored three more times in the third inning off BG starter Andrea Genter, with all of the damage coming after the first two hitters were retired. Melissa Taylor and Stefanie Volpe singled, and back-to-back doubles by Young and Melinda Moulden chased Genter.
The Wolverines got a fifth-inning run off BG freshman McKenna Houle. Kim Bugel walked, stole second and scored on a Kosanke single.
In the sixth inning, a bases-loaded double by Taylor gave the hosts an eight-run lead, and ended the game due to the "run rule."
Genter took the loss, falling to 3-5 on the season. Gillies moved to 7-2 with her complete-game victory, as U-M improved to 34-8 overall.
The Falcons had just four baserunners on the day, and did not advance a runner past first base. BGSU returns home for a three-game weekend series against Mid-American Conference foe Kent. The Falcons and Golden Flashes will play a Friday (April 21) single game at the BGSU Softball Field, followed by a Saturday (April 22) doubleheader. Friday's game is scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m., while Saturday's action is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
