ROCHESTER, Mich. -
Freshman McKenna Houle and sophomore Jessie Milosek combined on a three-hitter as the Bowling Green softball team recorded a 6-0 shutout win at Oakland University in non-league action Sunday (April 2). The game was played at the OU Softball Field in Rochester, Mich.
BGSU, now 15-8 overall, scored five runs in the top of the second inning and added another tally in the seventh. Oakland drops to 10-20 on the season.
One of the best scoring chances for the Golden Grizzlies came in the bottom of the first. Ericka Burns, who had two of OU's three hits, lined a one-out single off Houle's glove, and was erased on a Lauren Seffens fielder's choice. A Seffens stolen base was followed by a pair of walks, Houle's lone free passes of the game, to load the bases. But, Houle induced OU's Tiffany Evans to ground out to second base and end the threat.
The Falcons broke out on top, and chased OU starting pitcher Evans in the process, in the second. Erin Zwinck, who was 2-for-2 on the day, led off with a hustle double to right-center, and took third base on a passed ball. Renee Rosemeier's double scored Zwinck, and Natalie Phillips singled to send Rosemeier to third, Phillips taking second on the throw. Catcher Holly Frantz walked to load the bases, and all three runners moved up on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Angie Domschot tripled to deep right field to score Phillips and Frantz.
OU threatened to score in the fifth, but a fine defensive play kept the Golden Grizzlies goose-egged. The host school put runners on second and third with none out, after a pair of BG errors and a wild pitch. The next batter, Corinne Spanke, grounded a nubber back toward Houle. With the runner on third, Mary Kate McGowan, coming all the way, Houle raced in, fielded the ball and flipped it to Frantz in one motion. Frantz blocked the plate and applied the tag. Houle then induced the next two batters to line out to left and ground out to shortstop.
The Falcons' last run came in the seventh. Jen Domschot drew a leadoff walk, took third on Lynsey Ebel's long single to right, and scored on a wild pitch.
BGSU outhit the hosts, 9-3. Houle earned the win, improving her record to 5-3. She allowed just two hits in five innings. Milosek allowed a single hit in two innings of relief.
Evans, the first of three OU pitchers on the day, took the loss.
In addition to Zwinck's two-performance at the plate, seven other Falcons had one hit. Five of the nine hits by the Brown and Orange were of the extra-base variety, as Zwinck, Jen Domschot and Rosemeier all had doubles, and Angie Domschot and Colleen Bates each tripled.
The Falcons continue a nine-game road swing with a doubleheader at #13 Michigan Tuesday (April 4). Start time for the first game is 3:00 p.m.
