DeKALB, Ill. - Freshman McKenna Houle threw a three-hit shutout, and junior Jen Domschot hit her school-record sixth homer of the year as the Bowling Green softball team recorded a 2-0 win over Akron Saturday morning (May 13). The win propelled the Falcons into the championship round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament in DeKalb, Ill.
The win enabled the Falcons (now 33-17) to knock a third team out of the tourney. BGSU won elimination games over Marshall and host Northern Illinois on Friday.
UA's Lisa Keenan and Houle matched zeroes for four innings, with Keenan holding the Falcons hitless during that time. Jen Domschot got BGSU on the scoreboard in a big way, however, to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
The junior clubbed a Keenan offering over the fence in right-center for her sixth round-tripper of the year, a new BGSU record. The ball clipped a tree several feet beyond the fence, went over a second fence and landed on a street beyond the Mary M. Bell Field complex.
The Brown and Orange tallied an insurance run in the sixth. With one out, Angie Domschot hit a double down the left-field line. One out later, Erin Zwinck's single up the middle hit second base and bounced past diving UA second baseman Tracee McCoy, enabling Domschot to score.
Houle set down the Zips in the seventh, and the Falcons moved on to the championship vs. Central Michigan. The BG freshman improved her season record to 11-8 in throwing her third complete-game shutout of the year.
For the Falcons, the aforementioned hits by the Domschot twins and Zwinck were all the offense in the game, but it was enough to win. Keenan suffered the complete-game loss to fall to 16-13. The Zips end the season at 31-21.
