Baseball Drops 14-11 Decision To Akron

The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 14-11, to visiting Akron.
BG scored single tallies in the first and second innings. Aric Christman doubled leading off BG's first and scored on Alan Gilhousen's single. In the second inning, Brad Simon walked with two outs and scored on Matt Best's double.
After Akron had scored once in the top of the third, BG scored twice in its half of the inning. Alan Gilhousen was hit by a pitch, Lee Morrison reached on a error, and with two outs Kenny Burdine tripled in both runners.
The Zips tied the score at four with a three-run fourth inning. The Falcons scored five times in the bottom of the frame for a 9-4 lead. Brad Simon and Matt Best each singled. Following two strikeouts, Alan Gilhousen reached on an error to load the bases. Sean Ryan's double scored three runs, and Lee Morrison followed with a two-run home run.
Akron cut BG's lead to three at 9-6 with two runs in the fifth inning. Bowling Green responded with two runs in the fifth. Nick Elrod walked and came around to score on Aric Christman's home run.
The Zips scored five times in the sxith to tie the game at 11, and added the three decisive runs in the seventh.
Doug Flere made his first start since April 10th and allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings, while striking out five. Mike Muzi surrendered five runs in 1.1 innings. Brad Henry allowed two runs in 0.1 innings of middle relief, with Ryan Streb suffering the defeat by giving up Akron's first two runs in the seventh inning. Chad Curlis retired one of the three batters he faced, while Craig Menke recorded the final out.
Heading into the final day of the regular season, Bowling Green is 28-23-1 overall and 13-11 in the Mid-American Conference. Akron will take a 25-29 overall record and a 11-14 league mark into Sunday's doubleheader at BG's Steller Field.
Bowling Green leads Miami by percentage points (.542 to .538) for the final East Division playoff spot. Kent State and Ohio have clinched playoff berths from the East Division while Central Michigan and Ball State have assured themselves spots in next week's MAC tournament. The third spot from the West is up for grabs between three schools (Western Michigan 10-16, Northern Illinois 9-15 and Eastern Michigan 8-18).
Sunday's MAC doubleheaders have Akron at Bowling Green, Ohio at Miami, Kent State at Marshall, Northern Illinois at Central Michigan, Ball State at Eastern Michigan and Toledo at Western Michigan.
