BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green softball team, after recording one of the most successful seasons in school history, has completed the 2000 campaign. The Falcons ended the year with an overall record of 33-18, and BGSU finished with a Mid-American Conference mark of 13-7.
Last weekend, the Falcons recorded the best MAC Tournament effort in school history, rallying to finish second after losing the opening game. The Brown and Orange will lose just three seniors off the 2000 squad.
GREAT RECORD: The Falcons ended the season with a total of 33 wins, the fourth-most in school history ... the 1992 squad recorded a school-record 37 wins, while the 1988 team had 35 victories and the 1993 team had 34 ... BGSU's winning percentage of .647 ranks third in school annals ... the 1992 team had a BG-best .698 pct., having gone 37-16, and the '93 squad won at a .654 clip (34-18).
THE RECORDS: BGSU went 33-18 on the year, and finished 13-7 in MAC action. The Falcons started the season at 0-3, but tied the school record by winning the next 10 games. Last weekend, BGSU went 3-2 in MAC Tournament play, losing both games to eventual tourney champion Central Michigan. The Brown and Orange, the second seed for the tournament, opened play with a 3-0 loss to #3 CMU Thursday (May 11). The Falcons, knowing that a loss meant the end of the season, then proceeded to win three consecutive games before bowing out of the tournament.
On Friday (May 12), the Falcons eliminated #4 Marshall with a 4-3 win, then came back that evening for a 7-2 win over top seed and tourney host Northern Illinois.
BGSU knocked #5 Akron out of the tournament with a 2-0 victory Saturday (May 13) before losing to the Chippewas by a 9-4 count. Junior Jen Domschot and sophomore Renee Rosemeier were named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team.
Last Monday (May 8), the Falcons swept a non-league doubleheader from Cleveland State to end the regular season, beating the visiting Vikings by 7-6 and 4-0 scores.
The Falcons ended the MAC portion of of the regular season tied with Marshall at the top of the East Division. BG won the tiebreaker, however, by virtue of two wins in three head-to-head meetings with the Thundering Herd.
The Falcons ended the 1999 season with a 21-27 record, and finished MAC action with a 15-11 league mark, good for second place in the East Division. BG began the league slate with a 4-7 record before winning 11 of the final 15 MAC contests.

THE COACHES: BGSU's Leigh Ross-Shaw has completed her second season as a collegiate head coach, with an overall record of 54-45 and a MAC mark of 28-18. The Falcons' comeback win over Cleveland State was the 50th victory of her collegiate career.
Ross-Shaw assumed the top job after two years as BG's assistant coach. The Ottawa Lake, Mich., native came to the Falcon program in 1996 after serving as the head coach at Notre Dame Academy for four seasons. Ross-Shaw, a 1992 graduate of the University of Toledo, still holds numerous UT and MAC records, and remains the all-time conference leader in batting average (.398), at-bats and hits. She hit a MAC-record .447 as a senior en route to All-America Second-Team honors.
Amy Kyler has wrapped up her second season as Ross-Shaw's assistant. Kyler, quite possibly the top pitcher in Cleveland State history, graduated from CSU in 1997. She played for the Carolina Diamonds of the Women's Pro Softball League for two years before joining the expansion Akron Racers for the 1999 campaign. Kyler will pitch for the Racers again in 2000.
BG HAS FOUR ON ALL-MAC TEAM: The Falcons had four players named to the All-MAC Team, as voted by the league's head coaches ... senior Erin Zwinck and junior Nikki Rouhana made the first team, while senior Colleen Bates and junior Jen Domschot earned second-team honors ... the team was announced in conjunction with the MAC Tournament at Northern Illinois ... Zwinck hit a team-best .328 in the regular season, including a blistering .429 in MAC play ... she earned an at-large selection to the first team ... Rouhana hit .320 in the regular season, and her .373 average in conference action placed second on the team behind Zwinck ... in league play, Rouhana hit a team-best .569 ... Bates hit .271, and .242 in MAC games ... on the season, she led all players with 17 stolen bases ... Jen Domschot hit .321 in the regular season, and hit .333 with a .556 slugging pct. in league action ... both Bates and Domschot earned second-team honors for the second time in their respective careers ... Zwinck and Rouhana each made the all-league squad for the first time ever ... the Falcons's total of four honorees ties for the second-most in school annals ... the 1986 team had six All-MAC selections, while BGSU also had four in 1988, 1990 and 1997.
ZWINCK EARNS ACADEMIC HONORS AGAIN: Three Falcon student-athletes were selected to the 2000 GTE Academic All-District IV University Division Softball Team, it was announced Thursday (May 11) ... senior Erin Zwinck was named to the first team as a designated player, while sophomore pitcher Jessie Milosek and junior first baseman Nikki Rouhana earned second-team honors ... Zwinck, who made the GTE team for the third consecutive year, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 as a sport management major ... she was named to the second team in both 1998 and 1999 ... as a first-team all-district pick, Zwinck's name will be placed on the GTE Academic All-America ballot ... HOMER HAPPY: Junior Jen Domschot set a new school record by hitting her sixth homer of the season in Saturday's (May 13) win over Akron ... the ball cleared the fence in right-center, clipped some leaves and went over another fence, and landed in the street beyond the Mary M. Bell Field complex ... that homer broke the record of five round-trippers that she shared with three other players ... Colleen Bates was one of those players, having hit her fifth of the season the day before in the win over Marshall ... Amy Lienhardt (1988) was the first Falcon to hit five homers in a season, and Lynsey Ebel matched that mark in 1999.
HOMER HAPPY II: Entering the Leigh Ross-Shaw (head-coaching) Era, the BGSU single-season record for homers was eight ... last year's edition of the Falcons obliterated that mark by hitting 19 round-trippers ... not to be outdone, the 2000 squad matched that record by hitting 19 homers.
HOMER HAPPY III: Senior Colleen Bates ends her career as the BGSU career leader in homers ... after hitting a round-tripper in Friday's (May 12) win over Marshall, she ends her BGSU tenure with a total of 11 ... with one season to go in their respective careers, Jen Domschot and Lynsey Ebel are part of a second-place tie with eight career homers each.
ROUHANA NAMED MAC SCHOLAR: Junior Nikki Rouhana was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced last Tuesday (May 9) ... Rouhana earned the honor, given to just one male and one female student-athlete (regardless of sport) each week, for the first time in her BG career ... she hit .455 in the Falcons' series at Ohio the prior weekend.

MU drew first blood in the elimination game, with a first-inning run ... a double, a walk and a sacrifice fly gave the Herd a 1-0 lead ... a two-out error opened the door for BGSU in the second inning, and the Falcons took advantage ... after the first two hitters were retired, junior Lynsey Ebel lifted a fly ball toward left-center field, and wound up on second base when the MU leftfielder dropped the ball ... freshman Libby Voshell followed with a single to score Ebel, and Bates, the next batter, blasted a two-run homer to left ... BGSU scored another unearned run in the third ... Erin Zwinck led off with a single and moved to third on two infield grounders ... then, Nikki Rouhana drew a walk, and Ebel was hit by a pitch to load the bases ... McKenna Houle retired the Herd in the seventh to pick up her second save of the year ... sophomore Jessie Milosek got the win, allowing three runs in six hits ... she walked five batters and fanned two in five innings of work ...
