Men's Golf Finishes Sixth At MAC Championships

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Bowling Green men's golf team finished in sixth place at the 10-team Mid-American Conference Championships. The three-day tournament, which concluded Saturday (May 6), was held at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio.
The Falcons shot a final-round 301 to conclude the tournament with a team total of 1182. Kent won the tourney for the fourth consecutive year, shooting 1125 to outdistance second-place Toledo by seven strokes.
For the Falcons, junior Jon Smarrelli shot a one-over-par 289 to tie for 12th among individuals. Sophomores Justin Gillham and Brian Gerken tied for 21st with identical scores of 297.
Kent's Ben Curtis was the tournament medalist, shooting an 11-under-par 271 to beat teammate Jon Mills by three strokes. In addition to taking home medalist honors, Curtis also was named both MAC Golfer of the Year and earned the MAC Sportsmanship Award. The latter honor is voted by the 50 competing golfers at the league championship.
Kent's Herb Page was named the MAC Coach of the Year for the third straight season, while Miami's Eric Phipps earned MAC Freshman-of-the-Year honors.
Three Golden Flashes were named to the All-MAC First Team in Curtis, Mills and Danny Sahl. They were joined by Toledo's Tim Rice and Miami's Lee Curry. The second team consisted of UT's Richard Elliot, Eastern Michigan's Jaysen Hansen and Brent Goulding, Tim Countryman of Northern Illinois and Marshall's Sam O'Dell.
