BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green softball student-athlete Erin Zwinck has been named to the GTE Academic All-America Softball University Division First Team. Zwinck, who recently completed her senior season, becomes only the third Falcon softball student-athlete ever to earn All-America first-team honors.
Zwinck, who was selected to the team as a designated player, split time between the third-base and DP spots in 2000. She made 26 starts at the hot corner and 23 at the DP position.
Zwinck hit .329 as the Falcons recorded an overall record of 33-18, and she batted a whopping .429 in Mid-American Conference contests as the Brown and Orange tied for the league's East Division title. In the MAC Tournament, Zwinck hit .333 as BGSU posted a runner-up finish. She was named to the All-MAC First Team.
Zwinck, a native of White Lake, Mich., ranked eighth in the MAC with 49 hits. She scored 26 runs and knocked in 28. Her RBI total ties her for fourth on the BGSU single-season list. Zwinck had a slugging percentage of .436 to lead the team, and had a .492 slugging percentage in league games.
Zwinck had a team-high 15 multiple-hit games, including three-hit contests vs. both Kent and Ohio. The Falcons were 20-6 in games in which she started at third base.
Zwinck ends her BGSU career tied for sixth on the school list with 26 doubles. She is seventh with 10 triples, tied for eighth with five homers, ninth with 153 hits and 10th in both batting average (.291) and RBI (62).
Last month, Zwinck was named to the GTE Academic All-District IV First Team, making her eligible for the national team. She joins former Falcon softball standouts Amy Lienhardt (1988) and Kathy Holland (1995) in earning academic All-America first-team laurels.
Zwinck, the only MAC student-athlete named to the national first team, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 as a sport management major.
