The Bowling Green State University women's golf team returns six letterwinners from last year's squad which placed fifth at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Fourth-year head coach Kurt Thomas will have to replace three seniors (Missy Hinds, Kate Kolesnik and Shannon Sharp) that all competed in the 2000 MAC Championships.
This year's team will be formed around junior captain Shannon Smith, and sophomores Shelley Binzel and Stephanie Elsea. All three are very experienced and rounded out last season's MAC tournament squad for BG.
"We have a very experienced core of players returning this season which will help the four new members of the team prepare for the 2000-01 campaign," said Thomas. "Shelley had a fantastic first year, leading the team in scoring, gaining the record for scoring average and earning second-team All-MAC honors. I'm looking for a lot of competition in practice to make us a better team in competition. It is going to be very difficult to make the travel team this year, every member of the squad has a very good chance to travel."
The four newcomers consist of three incoming freshmen and a transfer. Rookies are Kari Evans (Louisville, KY/Eastern), Jenny Schnipke (Kalida, OH) and Julie Wise (Toledo, OH/St. Ursula), while Emily Hassen has transferred to BG from Eastern Michigan.
"I'm looking for Jenny to make an immediate impact on this team. She has a lot of junior experience and had a great senior year on the Kalida boys team. Kari and Julie have the skill to be productive as freshmen. Emily has a year of Division I experience and also could contribute immediately." added Thomas.
"I have a good feeling about junior Angel Garrett and senior Jennifer Stiff," said Thomas. "Both worked extremely hard last spring and have the experience to be major contributors." Rounding out the squad is Robyn Gaier and Kelly Garvin. "Both are very hardworking individuals and could also be factors as the season progresses."
"This year's team will have more depth than in the past. Everyone has the opportunity to compete. Last spring we had two second-place finishes (Grand Valley and Western Michigan). We also had a very good final round at the MAC tournament and we hope to build on the success from last spring."
