The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team will play game five of its six-game season opening road trip this Thursday at Detroit-Mercy. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
The Falcons finished third in the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panther Coca-Cola Classic this past weekend. BG lost a 2-1 overtime decision to Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday, but rebounded for a 3-1 victory over the host Panthers on Sunday. The three goal outburst equals the number of goals scored by the Falcons in their first three games of the season.
Senior Matt Lyons (Maineville, Ohio/Cincinnati Moeller), after scoring three goals in his first 45 collegiate matches, has two goals in three matches this year. Junior Detrick Matthews (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Hope-Rio Rancho, NM) tallied his first collegiate match-winning goal in Sunday's triumph.
Senior Adam Erhard (North Olmsted, Ohio) has three assists in four matches this year, after recording two assists in his first 34 matches for the Orange and Brown. Senior Fred Degand (Highland Park, Ill./Deerfield) is one goal shy of equalling his season-best of three set during the 1998 campaign. He has two goals this season tying his total from his freshman and junior seasons.
Freshman goalkeeper David DeGraff (Naperville, Ill./Central) blanked UWM for over 83 minutes on Sunday until Chad Dombrowski scored on a penalty kick to spoil his bid for his first collegiate shutout.
Redshirt freshman Matthew Martinka (Newton, N.J) made his collegiate debut on Sunday, while freshman P.J. Behan (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) and transfer Tim Butler (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights/Cleveland State) both had their Falcon debuts on Saturday.
The Titans of Detroit-Mercy enter Thursday's match with a 1-2 record. UDM lost its first two matches (2-0 to Loyola Marymount on Sept. 1, and 5-4 OT to San Francisco on Sept. 3), but won 2-1 at Niagara on Sept. 10. Marcel Flemming has three goals and one assist for seven points, while Anthony Sanchez, Jason Murdock and Aaron Byrd each have one goal this season.
