Bowling Green, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to Vanderbilt in the final game of the 2000 BGSU Diadora Classic.
After a scoreless first half, BG took a 1-0 lead at the 50:31 mark when Fred Degand's (Highland Park, Ill./Deerfield) header went off the post and into the net behind Commodore goalkeeper Brad Winter. Adam Erhard sent in a restart to Degand. The marker was Degand's third of the campaign, while Erhard garnered his team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Vanderbilt tied the score at the 65:29 mark when Eric Kubacki's header beat BG goalkeeper David DeGraff (Naperville, Ill./Central). VU scored the match-winning goal at the 73:29 mark as Chris Yingling's shot from 15 yards out went into the low corner of the net to DeGraff's left.
BG had a 22-13 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 lead in shots on goal. A potential Falcon goal in the first half was waived off due to an offsides.
In Sunday's first match, Ohio State scored three times in the final 15 minutes to snap a 1-1 tie and defeat Oakland 4-1. The Golden Grizzlies played the final 42 minutes down a man after Ron Mashni received his second yellow card of the match. Brian Feldhaus and John Tomaino each scored twice for the Buckeyes, while Mashni had the lone Oakland goal. OSU goalkeeper Kerry Thompson made seven saves plus OSU had a team save on OU's nine shots on goal.
The 2000 BGSU Diadora Classic All-Tournament team as selected by the coaching staffs included Ohio State's Brian Feldhaus, John Tomaino, Tony Monroe and Trey Halberdier, Oakland's Gunnar Halvorsen, Jason Perry and Viggo Anthonsen, Vanderbilt's Seth Gardiner and Chris Yingling, and Bowling Green's Matt Lyons (Maineville, Ohio/Cincinnati Moeller) and Fred Degand.
Both BGSU and OSU were awarded a point (tie) from Saturday's match (for tournament purposes only) that was cancelled with 10 minutes remaining in the first half due to weather. The Buckeyes were declared tournament champions with four points (three for win over Oakland, one for a tie against BGSU). Oakland earned second place honors (three for win over Vanderbilt, and won tiebreaker against Vanderbilt - head-to-head). Vanderbilt finished in third place and BGSU was fourth.
Bowling Green, now 2-5 overall, will face Michigan at Mickey Cochrane Field on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Wolverines are a first-year varsity soccer program.
