BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Caty Rommeck hammered out 19 kills as the Bowling Green State University volleyball team recorded a three-game sweep of visiting Marshall Saturday (Sept. 30). The Mid-American Conference match was held at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
The Falcons, who improve to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in MAC play, hit .262 as a team, as coach Denise Van De Walle used 13 different players in the contest. Marshall drops to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Junior Amber Vorst had eight kills off the bench, hitting .667 in the match, while JoAnna Papageorgiou had seven kills on the night. Freshman Susie Norris, one of the nation's leaders in digs, kept up her solid defensive play with 20 digs on the night. Rommeck was second on the team with nine digs, and had a team-high six total blocks.
Marshall's Sara Boyles had team highs of 15 kills and six blocks and hit .464 in the match. Freshman Ashley Barnard had 12 digs for the Thundering Herd.
BGSU rallied in game one after falling behind by a 6-4 margin. A service ace by junior Natalie Becker sparked a 5-0 Falcon run and -- after Marshall came back to tie the score at 10-10 -- a Becker kill began another 5-0 BGSU streak to end the game.
In game two, Marshall took an 11-7 lead before the Falcons came back. Becker and Rommeck combined for block assists twice in a row, and an MU ballhandling error brought BG within a point. Back-to-back service aces by the Herd's Tracey King -- MU's only two aces on the night -- gave the visitors a 13-10 lead, but a bloop shot by sophomore Kate Yeo landed on the Marshall side of the net for a kill, beginning a game-ending 5-0 run. Rommeck sandwiched a pair of kills around a Becker second-ball attack to end the game.
Game three saw Marshall's Boyles get hot. Four of her kills came all in a row to give the Herd a 7-4 lead. After another MU point, though, Papageorgiou put together her own point-scoring streak. Three consecutive kills by the senior moved the Falcons to within a point at 8-7. Moments later, with MU leading by a 10-9 count, a Vorst kill begin yet another 5-0 BGSU streak. After Marshall rallied to within 14-12, another Vorst kill ended the match.
Becker had two of the Falcons' six service aces on the night, and had a match-best 38 assists. Freshman Sara Sikorski also saw time at the setter spot, and had 10 assists of her own.
The Falcons now hit the road for three straight matches next week, beginning with a Wednesday (Oct. 4) contest at the arch-rival University of Toledo. Then, the Falcons will play weekend matches at Western Michigan Friday (Oct. 6) and Central Michigan Saturday (Oct. 7). Start time for all three matches is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
