CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Fred Degand has been drafted by the Cleveland Crunch of the National Professional Soccer League. Degand was tabbed in the territorial round of the draft.
Degand, a senior from Highland Park, Ill., saw action in 15 matches, starting them all, in 2000. He finished second on the team in both goals (four) and points (12). Degand was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Ohio Division I First Team in each of the last two years.
Degand also was named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region First Team following the 2000 season.
Degand scored goals against Creighton, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Vanderbilt, and Michigan this past season, and also dished out four assists on the year. He was named to the all-tournament teams at a pair of regular-season tournaments, the Coca-Cola Panther Invitational and the BGSU Diadora Classic. Additionally, Degand was an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection, and also was named to the MAC's All-Tournament team.
Degand finished his Falcon career with 11 goals and nine assists for 31 points.
"We are pleased with the way the draft turned out for our team," said Crunch head coach Bruce Miller in a press release issued by the team. "(Assistant coach) George (Fernandez) did a terrific job scouting players across the country that fit our team philosophy. We were able to draft the top five players on our list."
Former Falcon Steve Klein currently plays in the NPSL, as a member of the Harrisburg (Pa.) Heat. Klein is that team's fourth-leading scorer.
The Falcons finished the 2000 season with an overall record of 9-8-1. The Falcons tied for the MAC regular-season title with a 4-2-0 league mark, and advanced to the championship match of the league tournament.
