BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore Kim Griech and senior Angie Farmer combined for 31 points off the bench to lead the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to a 63-58 victory over the arch-rival University of Toledo Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13). The Mid-American Conference game was held at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 8-7 overall and 4-0 in the MAC. UT falls to 9-5 and 2-1 in league play.
Griech had a team-high 16 points, while Farmer had 15 on the afternoon. The two combined to made seven three-pointers in nine attempts as the BG bench outscored UT's subs, 33-13.
The Falcons took a quick 6-0 lead in the first 1:09, on baskets by junior Francine Miller, freshman Kelly Kapferer and senior Afra Smith. UT coach Mark Ehlen took a quick timeout, and the Rockets regrouped to score the next nine points. But, Griech and Farmer hit treys to give the Falcons a 12-9 lead at the 12:35 mark, and the Falcons never trailed again.
BG led by as many as seven points in the first half, after a Smith basket gave BG a 21-14 margin with 5:28 left. The Rockets got the Falcon lead down to three points, 27-24, at halftime.
BG held the Rockets to a field-goal percentage of just .278 (8-for-29) in the half en route to a 20-of-55 performance (.364) on the day. The Falcons also forced the visitors into 10 first-half turnovers en route to a game total of 19.
In the second half, Kapferer opened the scoring with a layup to give BG a five-point lead, and a Miller trey at the 18:30 mark gave the Falcons a 32-26 edge. But, UT's Kahli Carter, who scored a team-high 15 points, hit back-to-back baskets, and a Teresa Kahle layup tied the contest at 32-32. That's when Griech took over.
The sophomore scored the game's next six points, converting a conventional three-point play with 13:37 remaining, then hitting a shot from behind the arc 33 seconds later. Griech made six of her seven shots on the day and was 3-of-4 from long range.
A Mary Blessing triple brought the Rockets within one point with 11:15 left, but Miller answered with a basket. UT got within two points, at 43-41, when Courtney Risinger scored with 9:20 left, but the visitors could not get any closer.
A Miller hoop was followed by a Farmer three-point play to give the Falcons a 48-41 lead, and UT never got closer than five points thereafter. Junior Dana Western gave the Falcons a double-digit lead, 55-45, as she hit a driving shot as the shot-clock buzzer sounded with 5:01 left.
After four-straight UT free throws got UT within six points, Farmer hit a trey to move the BG lead to 58-49 with 4:14 left. Farmer was 4-of-5 from three-point land.
The Falcons struggled from the free-throw line in the late going, sinking just three charity tosses in six attempts over the final 1:13. The Falcons were 7-of-13 from the stripe (.538) in the game.
UT was within six points, and had the ball, with a minute to go, but Carter missed a three-point attempt. Miller grabbed the rebound and hit Griech with a long outlet pass. Griech's breakaway layup gave BG a 61-53 margin.
"This was a game we wanted," said BGSU head coach Dee Knoblauch. "Toledo has a very good team this year, and they are going to be up there in the MAC. We were on our own floor, and we needed to get a game like this, so this was sweet.
"I thought our defense was outstanding today. We were very pumped up for this game, and I think everybody brought a little bit extra."
The BG victory broke a four-game winning streak for the Rockets in the series, and the Falcons now hold a 28-22 series lead. Only one member of the Falcon team, Farmer, had been part of a prior win over Toledo.
Joining Griech and Farmer in double digits were Smith and Miller, with 10 points apiece. Smith added a game-high six assists.
The Falcons held UT's top-two scorers, Carter and Risinger, to a combined 7-of-23 from the field. For the visitors, Melantha Herron had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, and Tia Davis joined Carter and Herron in double figures with 11 points.
"I thought Bowling Green played a great game," said UT coach Ehlen. "Every time we made a little run at them, they responded with a big shot, and were able to hold off everything we threw at them."
The Falcons shot .407 from the field on the day, and hit eight three-pointers in 18 attempts (.444). UT was just 2-of-16 (.125) from long range. BG had 15 turnovers, marking the third time this year (all in the last four games) that the Falcons had fewer turnovers than the opponent.
Senior Jackie Adlington, playing in just her third game of the year, had a team-high seven rebounds in just 13 minutes for BG. Adlington was hurt in the season opener, and returned to play one minute in Tuesday's (Jan. 9) win over Central Michigan.
The Falcons are now idle for over a week, until a Jan. 22 trip to Northeast Ohio to play defending MAC champion Kent State University.
