Kane, Ugarte score first-half goals as BG ends non-league slate at 4-1-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team ended the non-conference portion of the schedule on a successful note, posting a 2-0 win over the University of Detroit Mercy on Thursday night (Sept. 10) at Cochrane Stadium.

Senior Ella Kane scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 21st minute for the Falcons (4-1-1), while freshman Mia Ugarte doubled the lead with her first collegiate goal just 30 seconds before halftime.

The Falcons controlled play throughout the evening. BGSU outshot the Titans, 25-6, and also led in shots on goal (10-1) and corner kicks (9-3).

Junior Payton O'Malley made one save en route to the shutout win on Thursday night. For the Titans (2-4-1), Eva Hill made five saves in the first half, while Isabelle Renner had three saves while working a scoreless second half.

Kane's goal came after a short right-side cross from fellow senior Isabella Mazzaferro. The ball found Kane at the far post, and she tapped it home for her first goal of the season.

Then, late in the first half, the ball was knocked out of the 18-yard box after a BGSU corner kick, but junior Haley Wolf played a perfectly-weighted ball back into the mixer, and Ugarte was there to head it past Hill to double the BG lead.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT: SENIOR NIGHT
• As mentioned, Thursday was Senior Night for the women's soccer Falcons, with four members of the program recognized in ceremonies prior to the match. That quartet included Christine Erdman, Isabella Mazzaferro, Jayna Searles and Lexi White.
• The Falcons are now 9-0-2 in the last 11 Senior Day/Night contests, having outscored the opponents by a 26-4 count in those 11 matches.

ALSO NOTEWORTHY
• BGSU was the only NCAA Division-I program in the nation to go the entire 2025 season without ever allowing more than one goal in a match. BGSU's streak – the longest in the nation – is now at 29 games. The last time the Falcons allowed multiple goals in a match came in the final 2024 regular-season contest, at Kent State (a 4-2 loss on Oct. 31, 2024).
• BGSU now has seven goals this season to date, and six different players have found the back of the net in 2026.
• Senior Ella Kane's goal on Thursday night was her first of the season, her third as a Falcon and the fourth of her collegiate career. It was also the second game-winning goal of her career, with both GWG coming with the Falcons.
• Senior Isabella Mazzaferro now has nine career assists and 35 career points. She has scored 10 points in her season-plus with the Falcons.
• On Senior Night, fifth-year Falcon Jayna Searles picked up the third assist of her career and her first since her freshman year. Searles had two assists in a win at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 23, 2022.
• Junior Haley Wolf recorded an assist i the win over the Titans, her first of the season and her fourth as a Falcon.
• Junior Payton O'Malley picked up the 12th complete-match shutout of her BGSU career on Thursday night. She has a goals-against average of just 0.45 this season, and lowered her career GAA to a BGSU record-low 0.82.
• BGSU is 3-0-0 against Horizon League schools this season, and the Falcons have won seven-straight games vs. HL foes. In fact, BGSU is 20-0-1 in the last 21 matches vs. current Horizon League schools, since a loss to Oakland over a decade ago (Aug. 28, 2016).
• The Falcons now lead Detroit Mercy, 10-8-0, in the all-time series, and BGSU has won seven-straight series meetings by a combined score of 16-4.
• BGSU is undefeated in the last 45 home matches (44-0-1) when scoring at least twice. The last time BG scored two or more goals at Cochrane Stadium and lost was on Oct. 20, 2016 (a 4-3 loss to Western Michigan).
• Overall, BGSU is now 55-15-16 at Cochrane Stadium since the beginning of the 2017 season.

UP NEXT
The Falcons will be back at Cochrane Stadium next Thursday evening (Sept. 17), opening Mid-American Conference action against Eastern Michigan. That contest will begin at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
