DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University broke out to a quick 10-2 lead en route to a 73-58 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday (Jan. 24). The Mid-American Conference game was held at NIU's Evans Field House.
BGSU redshirt freshman Pam Brown scored the game's first basket, but the Falcons would not lead again on the night. For the most part, the lead stayed at about 10 points for the bulk of the first half.
NIU led by 10, 27-17, at the break, but BGSU sophomore Kim Griech got hot midway through the second half, hitting three three-point baskets within a span of 1:21. Griech led the Falcons with nine points in the game, all during that stretch.
When Griech's last trey dropped through the net, the Falcons trailed by just four points with 9:19 left. But, the Falcons (8-9 overall, 4-2 MAC) could not get any closer. NIU hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to extend the lead.
Three Falcons had eight points in the game, including seniors Afra Smith and Jackie Adlington and Brown. Adlington had a team-high six rebounds.
Kristan Knake led the hosts, now 8-11 overall and 4-2 in MAC action, with 21 points, while Michelle Johnson added 17 points and 11 boards.
BGSU's leading scorer, Francine Miller, did not suit up for the game, still feeling the effects of a knee injury suffered in Monday's (Jan. 22) contest at Kent State.
The Falcons return home to face the University at Buffalo in Saturday (Jan. 27) action. That game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
