Bowling Green, Northern Michigan Battle to 3-3 Tie
October 21, 2001 | Ice Hockey
Northern Michigan struck first at 15:37 of the first period when Ryan Carrigan backhanded a shot from Alan Swanson to the left-side of the net past Tyler Masters. It was the first goal of the season for Carrigan.
The Wildcats scored their second goal of the game on a power play at 9:13 of the second period when Sean Owens shot past Masters from the top of the crease for a 2-0 lead. Mike Stutzel and Chad Theuer were credited with assists.
Momentum took a turn for the better for BGSU at 13:01 when sophomore forward Mark Wires took a pass from behind the net by defenseman Grady Moore and shot from 10 feet out to the open end of the net past goalie Craig Kowalski. The Falcons' first goal of the night cut their deficit to just one goal, 2-1. Senior Scott Hewson was also credited with an assist.
It was after the goal, however, that the real action began as three players from each side were called for double minors for roughing. BG's Brian Escobedo, Austin de Luis and Hewson, along with NMU's Justin Kinnunen, Dan Donnette and Alan Swanson, squared off against each other in front of the net after Wires' goal for over a minute.
Bowling Green tied the score at 2-2 when freshman Ryan Minnabarriet walked the puck in just above the crease and scored through the five-hole at 16:24 via a pass from Marc Barlow and Joe Statkus. It was Minnabarriet's first goal in the Brown and Orange.
Then Northern Michigan pulled ahead again in the third period with a power play goal by Swanson at 7:16.
But again BGSU answered. This time it was freshman Colen Pappas scoring on a backhander for a power play goal to tie the score at 3-3. His first collegiate goal came at 12:06 of the third period and was assisted by Escobedo and Greg Day.
The game was scoreless throughout the remainder of regulation and through five minutes of overtime.
"It's a process learning how to win," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "But, being on the road for back-to-back weekends in the places we've been, I'm proud of the effort."
Powers was happy to see the Falcons notch its best scoring game of the season.
"We got a bit of a monkey off of our back," Powers said about the three goals scored by the Falcons. "I thought we played one heck of a hockey game. It was mean. We had a lot of guys playing through some serious bumps and bruises."
Masters earned top honors in the Perani Cup voting by media members thanks to his 36 saves in the net in 65 minutes of action. He finished the weekend with 62 saves against the Wildcats and five goals allowed.
The Falcons host Ohio State next weekend, beginning Friday, Oct. 26, for its home opener of the 2001-02 season at BGSU Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
