Falcons Defeat Ohio State in Home Opener, 5-3

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team made its 2001-02 home-opener a memorable one with a 5-3 victory over visiting Ohio State on Friday night in front of 3,201 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Five different Falcons netted a goal for BGSU's first victory of the season. Sophomore Mark Wires' goal at 19:42 of the second period gave the home team a 4-2 lead that they would not surrender. Scott Hewson and Grady Moore assisted on the power play goal for BGSU.
After Ohio State's R.J. Umberger scored to cut the lead to 4-3 at 1:10 of the final period, the BGSU defense stiffened and freshman Ryan Minnabarriet scored on a empty net at 19:39 of the third period to give the Falcons their 5-3 victory. Brian Escobedo assisted on the goal.
The Buckeyes (1-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in CCHA) struck first early in the first period when Jason Crain found the net less than two minutes into the game (1:21). Miguel Lafleche and Scott May assisted on the goal.
However, Bowling Green answered with a power play goal by Marc Barlow, his first of the season, at 13:24 to knot the score at 1-1. Senior Greg Day and sophomore D'Arcy McConvey assisted on the goal. For Day, it was his 100th career point as a Falcon.
The two teams traded goals before the period ended with OSU's Mike McCormick scoring at 16:46 and BGSU's Scott Hewson answering at 18:33. Both were power play goals. The Falcons then took their first lead of the game just 33 seconds into the second period with a score by Ryan Wetterberg, his first goal of the season.
Tyler Masters had 31 saves in the net for Bowling Green while Mike Betz stopped 23 shots for OSU. Wires added an assist in the game and was voted the Perani Cup Player of the Game.
Ohio State outshot the Falcons 34-28 and were 2-for-9 on the power play. Bowling Green was three for six in power play opportunities.
BGSU (1-2-2 overall, 1-1-1 in CCHA) host the Buckeyes for their second game of the weekend on Saturday at the Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
