Bowling Green, Ohio - The visiting University of Kentucky responded to a late Falcon score with two goals of its own to pull ahead of the host Bowling Green State University men's soccer team on a rainy and blustery Friday afternoon, winning 3-1. The match was played in a constant wind and a steady rain that didn't end until midway through the second half.
The Falcons' first break of the match came late when a UK player was called for a handball just outside of the box. Senior Detrick Matthews attempted the free kick and glanced the ball off of a streaking Matt Leardini from the right side. The score at 77:11 tied the game at 1-1 and it came off of BGSU's second shot of the day.
However, the Wildcats (5-4-1 overall, 3-0 in Mid-American Conference) responded with two goals by junior John Monebrake at 81:23 and 84:31 to put Kentucky out of reach. Monebrake had a game-high eight shot attempts, including five on goal. UK outshot Bowling Green 18-3, including 12-2 in the second half. UK also held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks with eight coming in the first half.
It was off of a corner kick that put Kentucky on the board first at 58:51. Ilkka Jantti headed in Nathan Fleetwood's corner kick for a 1-0 lead. It was the first score off of a corner kick for the Wildcats this season.
"We got beat in every phase of the game," said BGSU coach Mel Mahler. "We haven't found an answer in the last three matches."
BGSU's sophomore goalkeeper, David DeGraff, had five saves in the net and allowed three goals in 90 minutes of action. Richie Francis and Jonathan Wells were the only other Falcons to attempt shots.
Bowling Green (3-3-1 overall, 1-2 in the MAC) host Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Cochrane Field. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
