STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The 256-player singles prequalifying draw was trimmed down to a final 10, including a member of the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships Monday (Oct. 8). The tournament is being held at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
A BGSU doubles team also remains in action at the tourney, and will play Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 9).
BGSU junior Geoff Hiscox advanced to the qualifying tournament which takes place Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 10-11). Players must win two more matches to reach the Oct. 11-14 main draw.
The other competitors who advanced include TCU's Daniel Wajnberg, Baylor's Marcus Hornung, Matias Marin and Zoltan Papp, Arkansas' Oggie Kolev, Wisconsin's Alexander Kasarov, Vanderbilt's Chad Harris, Pepperdine's Calle Hansen and Florida State's Romain Jurd.
All but three of the 10 players won their fifth match in four days to advance. Due to two late withdrawals in the qualifying tournament, the match between Hiscox and TCU's Wajnberg was pulled, allowing both to advance, and FSU's Jurd lost his fourth round match, but was drawn as a "lucky loser."
Hiscox is scheduled to meet Tulsa's Pavel Sebastyanski in Tuesday action.
Additionally, Hiscox and BGSU senior Mike Kossoff are in the doubles qualifier, according to Falcon head coach Jay Harris. The Hiscox/Kossoff tandem, an alternate for the qualifier, were selected to participate when a doubles slot came open.
Hiscox is scheduled to meet Sebastyanski at noon Tuesday, with the BGSU doubles match set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
"We're extremely excited," said Harris. "This is the first time our program has gotten this far in singles action. We got to the qualifier in doubles, of course, a few years ago (the team of Radu Bartan and Matt Wiles), but for Geoff to win that many singles matches is quite an accomplishment.
"Really, for the entire team to win as many matches as we did and compete as well as we have, we are very excited. We feel that we have taken another step forward as a program. Basically, we have someone competing among the top-50 singles players in the nation, and a doubles team in among the top 40 or 50 teams. We are very excited to be competing with those types of teams and players."
