Bowling Green, Ohio - After losing game one in their first match of the MAC tournament, the tenacious Bowling Green Falcons defeated the Western Michigan Broncos, 3-2 (23-30, 30-19, 30-21, 28-30, 15-13). Their final home match of the season in Anderson Arena was where the Falcons defeated the Broncos in their opening conference match of the season (Sept. 21). In that match, BG shut down Western in three games (30-23, 30-26, 32-30). That match snapped a four-match winning streak for the Broncos.
The win gave Bowling Green and head coach Denise Van De Walle 21 wins on the season. The 1999 season was the last time the team hit that benchmark. The win over Western Michigan also gives Van De Walle her 170th MAC victory.
The Falcons had four players in double-digit kills and five players with double-digit digs. Caty Rommeck led BGSU to their quarterfinal victory, recording another double-double with 21 kills and 18 digs, leading the team in hitting percentage with .327. Rommeck also had four total blocks. Playing a key role off the bench, Kristin Gamby knocked down a team-high 22 kills, as well as posting a team-high eight blocks.
Natalie Becker had a team-high sixty assists, as well as 12 digs. Classmate Amber Vorst had nine kills and 13 digs. Vorst's 13 digs ranked second on the team.
Performing well from the sophomore class were Laura Twyman and Susie Norris. Twyman tied a career-high 13 kills, hitting .303. She also had six total blocks. Norris posted a double-double performance with 10 kills and twelve digs, as well as two total blocks.
BG posted 78 team kills, hitting .214 on the night and Western Michigan had 61, hitting .115. The Falcons had 15 total team blocks, while the Broncos had 8.
Northern Illinois defeated Toledo in three straight games, giving them home-court advantage for the remainder of the tournament. Bowling Green will face Ball State, who defeated Eastern Michigan, in the first semi-final match of the tournament. The match will take place at 4:30 CST at Chick Evans Field House in DeKalb, Illinois. Miami defeated Akron 3-1 to round out the tournament field. The match between Northern Illinois and Miami will follow the Bowling Green match.
