BGSU Establishes Records in 3-2 Victory Over Lake Superior

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - Bowling Green State University recorded its 700th varsity victory and coach Buddy Powers registered his 250th career victory in the Falcons 3-2 decision at Lake Superior State University on Friday night.
The win made BGSU's record in over 32 years of varsity hockey 700-494-68 and improved Powers' record in over 13 years of collegiate coaching to 250-201-38. It also marked Bowling Green's third victory in its last five games and sixth straight over the Lakers.
Senior Austin de Luis struck first for Bowling Green with an even strength goal at 10:32 of the first period. It was just his second of the season and was assisted by Ryan Minnabarriet and Brian Escobedo. Sophomore Mark Wires then scored next at 14:41 on another even strength goal. His was assisted by Scott Hewson and Roger Leonard and was his third netter of the year.
Senior captain Greg Day added to BGSU's first period frenzy with a power play goal at 16:17 for a 3-0 Falcon lead at the end of the first period. Day's goal was his sixth of the year and his fourth power play goal. Grady Moore and Kevin Bieksa assisted on the goal.
The Lakers fought back with a goal late in the second period by Chris Peterson (18:31) and another late in the third period by Chris McNamara (15:23), but Falcon goalie Tyler Masters hung tough to record 31 saves on 33 shot attempts.
LSSU (2-9-0 overall, 1-8-0 in CCHA) outshot Bowling Green, 33-31. BGSU was 1-for-3 on the power play while Lake Superior was 1-for-5.
The Falcons improve to 4-6-3 overall, 3-5-1 in the CCHA, and complete the two-game series in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on 88.1 FM.
