Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - Bowling Green took a 2-1 lead into the final period at Taffy Abel Arena Saturday night, but two third period goals by host Lake Superior gave the Lakers a 3-2 victory and a weekend series split versus the Falcons. Bowling Green won Friday night's contest, 3-2.
After Chris McNamara gave LSSU an early lead in the first period (4:59), Bowling Green stormed back in the second. First, sophomore forward Roger Leonard scored off of Marc Barlow's shot that went off the glass behind the net for his second goal of the season. Leonard shot past Matt Violin and tied the score at 4:41 of the second period. Senior Grady Moore then gave BGSU the 2-1 lead at 19:39 of the second period from an assist by Ryan Wetterberg. It was Moore's fourth goal of the year.
Bowling Green's Tyler Masters kept the Lakers in check during the Falcons scoring run with 14 of his 32 saves coming in the second period.
However, Lake Superior answered with two goals of its own in the final period from Chris Peterson (1:23) and Jeremy Bachusz (7:23) for the 3-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory.
Violin ended with a game-high 49 saves for the Lakers while neither team scored a power play goal. BGSU was 0-for-2 and LSSU was 0-for-4 with the man advantage. BGSU outshot the hosts for the game, 51-35.
The LSSU victory snapped a six-game winning streak for the Falcons against the Lakers.
Bowling Green (4-7-3 overall, 3-6-1 in CCHA) begins a four-game homestand next weekend with a visit from No. 8-ranked Nebraska-Omaha at the BGSU Ice Arena (Nov. 30-Dec. 1). Both faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
