Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green hockey team skated with Nebraska-Omaha from the opening faceoff and in the end fought to a 2-2 tie in overtime against the 14th-ranked Mavericks in front of 2,427 in attendance at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Bowling Green got things going right from the start when Brian Escobedo and Austin de Luis joined captain Greg Day on a fastbreak, feeding him the puck at the top of the right circle. From there, Day shot near-side on goalie Dan Ellis for his seventh goal of the season, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.
The Falcons played in Nebraska-Omaha's end for most of the first period, outshooting the guests 11-9 in the opening period, but were 0-for-3 on the power play. UNO had four penalties in the first 20 minutes compared to BGSU's two.
UNO bounced back in the second period, beginning with an even-strength goal by Jason Jaworski at 4:10, and then the go-ahead goal by Greg Zanon on the power play at 10:01. It was the first goal of the season for both Mavericks. UNO outshot the Falcons 20-12 in the second period while BGSU goalie Tyler Masters had 20 saves in the net.
Kevin Bieksa knotted things at 2-2 in the third period when he stole a Maverick pass deep in the UNO zone and shot past Ellis for his first goal of the season. His even strength goal came at 12:57 in the third.
Both teams had opportunities during the remainder of the third period and in the scoreless overtime period, but both goalies and defenses rose to the occasion. Masters finished with a game-high 40 saves and earned Perani Cup three-star honors. Ellis ended with 32 saves.
UNO outshot Bowling Green 42-34 and were 1-for-4 on the power play. BGSU ended 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
"I thought it was a hard-fought game by both teams," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "Both teams had good shots and both goalies had great games."
Day's goal in the first period was the 50th of his career and gave him his 110th career point.
