It took Bowling Green three overtimes to do it, but in the end freshman Jon Hundley's goal at 121:33 of the 3rd overtime period was the difference. Hundley's marker gave the Falcons the deciding goal to move No. 5 seed BGSU past No. 4 seed Buffalo in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference men's soccer tournament at the University of Akron, 1-0.
Defender Ricky Harper sent a high, lofting serve from the left sideline into the box, where a Buffalo defender attempted to deflect it with a header. The ball only skimmed the defender's head before falling at the feet of Hundley, who settled it before blasting it back to the far left corner of the net. It was Hundley's game-high eighth shot attempt and his second goal of the season.
Bowling Green held the advantage in every statistical category throughout the game. The Falcons outshot Buffalo 9-5 in the first half and 10-7 in the second half. For the game, BGSU outshot the Bulls 25-16 and had a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"It was a pretty physical game and I'm proud of our players to hang in there and keep their composure," BGSU coach Mel Mahler said. "It was a hard-fought game and I'm pleased with our effort."
Buffalo had 19 team fouls and three different players with yellow cards, including Mike Geller who had two yellows and was disqualified just before halftime.
David DeGraff had nine saves in the net for Bowling Green.
The Falcons are now 13-4-0 all-time in MAC Tournament games.
Bowling Green (8-7-1 overall) ends Buffalo's season with the victory and moves on to the MAC semifinals to face No. 1 seed Kentucky at Lee Jackson Field on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 12 p.m.
