Fairbanks, Alaska - The Bowling Green hockey team dropped its second game of the weekend to Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday night at the Carlson Center, 5-2, in front of 2,795 in attendance.
Six of the seven goals scored in the game came in a frantic second period that saw the Nanooks outshot Bowling Green, 18-11. UAF jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Aaron Voros (3:04) and David Keough (5:32) early in the period.
However, Bowling Green's Scott Hewson cut the deficit to just one goal at 7:14. As Hewson was falling outside the crease, he wristed a shot glove-side on UAF goalie Preston McKay. D'Arcy McConvey and Kevin Bieksa assisted on the goal.
But, three more goals by the Nanooks, including two within a 44-second span, pushed the home team's lead to 5-1 before the end of the second period.
McConvey scored the final goal of the game at 9:22 in the third period when he stole a pass deep in Fairbank's zone and beat McKay with a slapshot from inside the left circle.
"If we finish some of our chances in the first period the game might have taken a different turn," said Powers. "Alaska had some chances and they buried them." Bowling Green had four shots on goal before UAF's first shot on goal in the first period.
An experiment in readjusting the lines worked for coach Buddy Powers as sophomore D'Arcy McConvey was moved from his center-forward position to left wing alongside scoring leader Greg Day and Scott Hewson. McConvey had a third of Bowling Green's shots in the first period with six shots, including three on goal, and finished with a team-high six shots and was plus two.
"I think if we can take a positive out of this weekend it's the play of McConvey, Day and Hewson," said Powers. "He certainly looked at home there. I'm really encouraged with how things went for him."
The Falcon defense held the Nanooks scoreless on eight power play attempts and freshman Jordan Sigalet finished with 38 saves in the net. McKay had 23 saves for UAF. Alaska Fairbanks outshot Bowling Green, 43-25.
Bowling Green drops to 5-10-4 overall, 4-9-2 in the CCHA.
The Falcons begin their Christmas break and return to action at the Wells Fargo Cup at the University of Denver (Dec. 28-29).
