TUCSON, Ariz. - The Bowling Green State University softball team scored four times in the fourth inning, erasing a 1-0 deficit en route to a 7-2 victory over New Mexico State University. The Sunday (Feb. 18) game, part of the Pepsi Arizona Classic, was held at Hillenbrand Stadium.
With the victory, the Falcons conclude tournament play with a 2-3 record. NMSU dropped to 0-5 on the weekend and 3-13 on the year.
The Aggies got on the board first, stringing together three-straight singles off BGSU junior Andrea Genter in the top of the fourth inning. The ball was misplayed in leftfield after the third single, allowing NMSU's Adrian Nobles to score an unearned run.
The Falcons took the lead for good in the bottom of that inning. Senior Angie Domschot led off with a single, and freshman Jenifer Kernahan laid down a sacrifice bunt that resulted in both runners advancing safely. Senior Jen Domschot's infield single loaded the bases. Then, junior Renee Rosemeier singled to score Angie Domschot, and each runner took an extra base on an error by the NMSU centerfielder, with Kernahan coming around to score.
Rosemeier's RBI was her team-leading seventh of the season.
A groundout by senior Nikki Rouhana plated Jen Domschot, and senior Lynsey Ebel reached on an error with Rosemeier scoring on the play.
In the fifth, the Aggies got a run back on a walk, a wild pitch and a single, but the Falcons struck for two more in the bottom of that inning. Again, Angie Domschot started things, with a one-out single. Kernahan doubled to score Domschot, and scored herself when Rosemeier reached on a two-out error.
The Brown and Orange tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Ebel led off with a single, and moved to second on a hit by sophomore Jess Jenkins. Sophomore Libby Voshell reached base on an error, with Ebel scoring the final run of the game.
Genter scattered five hits over five innings in earning her first victory of the season. She allowed just one earned run. Freshman Jody Johnson pitched two hitless innings in relief.
Angie Domschot had two of BGSU's seven hits in the game.
The Falcons are now idle from scheduled competition until a scheduled March 7 doubleheader vs. the University of Dayton. Northwest-Ohio weather permitting, the first game will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
