Men's Tennis Falls To #62 SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Nationally-ranked San Diego State University captured the doubles point, then took all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team. Friday's (March 16) match was held in San Diego.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 10-6 in dual-match play on the season. The Brown and Orange of head coach Jay Harris finish the team's spring trip with a 3-2 record.
The Aztecs, ranked 62nd in the nation in the latest ITA poll, got a win from sophomore Oliver Maiberger at the top flight. Maiberger, ranked 32nd in the country among singles players, downed BGSU junior Vitek Wild.
At the second flight, sophomore Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo nearly gave the Falcons a victory, falling to Shawn Hiatt in a third-set tiebreaker.
BGSU's other competitors in singles action included sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo at the third flight, freshman Nick Moxley at the fourth level, and juniors Mike Kossoff and Ed Kuresman at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
In doubles action, the Falcon team of Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and Moxley earned an 8-6 win over the Aztecs' Matt Bere and Khalid Naffa. BGSU's aforementioned duo won for the third time in as many matches, and improved to 4-2 as a team this year. BGSU has used a total of 21 different doubles teams this year.
The Falcons' other doubles duos included Kuresman and Wild at the top flight and sophomore Peter Gardonyi and senior Brandon Gabel at the second level. The Gardonyi/Gabel team lost by a narrow 8-6 score.
BGSU will return to the Midwest to prepare for Thursday's (March 22) match at the University of Michigan. Following that contest, the Brown and Orange will head to St. Bonaventure, N.Y., for a pair of Saturday (March 24) matches. On that date, BGSU will open Mid-American Conference dual play with a neutral-site match vs. the University at Buffalo, then will face host St. Bonaventure University later that day.
