PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team has achieved a historic first. The Falcons of head coach Jay Harris have broken into the national rankings for the first time in school history.
BGSU is ranked 75th in the country in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The rankings, released Wednesday (March 21), are administered and released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
This is the first week of the season where the rankings are determined by the ITA's point-per-match computer formula. The previous eight rankings were determined by a poll due to the fact there are not enough results early in the season to administer a computer ranking.
UCLA holds down the top spot in the men's Division I top 25 for the fifth-straight week.
BGSU is the only Mid-American Conference school listed in this week's rankings.
"This is obviously a big accomplishment," said Harris. "It is a breakthrough for our program."
The Falcons will play another ranked team for the third time in four matches Thursday (March 22), heading to Ann Arbor to face the 55th-ranked University of Michigan. Following that match, BGSU will open MAC action with Saturday's (March 24) contest against the University at Buffalo. That neutral-site match will be held in St. Bonaventure, N.Y., where the Falcons will meet the host Bonnies later in the day.
