CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Junior Jessie Milosek used both her arm and her bat to lift the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 2-1 victory over Liberty University in Sunday (March 25) action. The game, the first of a pair between the Falcons and the Lady Flames, was held at The Park in Charlottesville.
With the win, the Brown and Orange improved to 2-3 in the Who's Hoo Tournament, hosted by the University of Virginia. BGSU is now 9-10 on the year, while Liberty drops to 9-25.
The teams played three scoreless innings before the Falcons put an unearned run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Jen Domschot reached on an error to start the inning, and junior Renee Rosemeier's sacrifice bunt moved her to second. A groundout by senior Angie Domschot advanced her twin sister to third base, and Jen Domschot scored when senior Lynsey Ebel reached on another error by the Lady Flames. Despite getting no hits in the inning, and just one in the game to that point, the Falcons led, 1-0.
Milosek helped her own cause in the fifth frame. Junior Holly Frantz doubled to left-center to lead off the inning, and sophomore Kandice Machain's sac bunt put Frantz on third base. After LU pitcher Carie Van Artsdalen got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Milosek came through with a two-out single to plate Frantz.
Milosek, batting for the first time since her freshman year, was 1-for-2 in the game. She had two hits in 10 at-bats during the 1999 season, her first at BG.
LU got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, with a walk, a groundout and a single leading to the Lady Flames' lone run. Milosek, however, retired LU one-two-three in the seventh inning to earn her third win in six decisions this year.
Milosek threw a five-hitter in the complete-game effort. Her sixth-inning walk was the only free pass she issued all game, and she struck out seven.
Van Artsdalen took the loss despite allowing only six hits in the game. She walked one batter and fanned five.
Frantz had two of the Falcons' six hits in the game. Redshirt freshman Liz Tuza, who came in as a pinch-runner in the sixth inning, had the first stolen base of her collegiate career.
The Falcons and Lady Flames were scheduled to return to the field for a second Sunday game.
