The Bowling Green State University Falcons fell to 11-6 overall on the season as they were defeated in Wright State University's home opener, 10-4. The non-conference loss was fueled by an early Wright State lead in which the Falcons were unable to catch up.
The Falcons were the first to score in the game, as one run by senior DH Scott Dukate was produced off of two hits in the second inning. However, WSU answered back by scoring four in the latter half of the second inning, mainly coming off a bases-loaded 3-RBI triple by Andrew Theado. Wright State scored three more in the next inning coming from only two hits and four Falcon errors.
Bowling Green would score next as sophomore SS Corey Loomis smacked his third home run of the year, a solo shot. However, Wright State would answer back yet again as they would score the remainder of their total runs in the latter half of that inning, which included a 2-RBI double by Trent Matthews.
BG produced two more runs in the eighth inning, which began as sophomore 1B Kelly Hunt doubled to left-centerfield, recording his fourth hit of the day. He was then knocked in by a two-run homerun coming from Dukate, his team-leading fourth of the year. The Falcons were unable to produce any more runs, and freshman RHP Aaron Braden (4-2) picked up the win for WSU. BG Freshman LHP Neil Schmitz (0-1) made his first collegiate start pitching three innings and giving up four earned runs (seven total) on five hits en route to picking up the decision and loss.
BGSU heads to Athens, Ohio to begin a four-game MAC series with Ohio University. Play begins Friday at 3:00pm as OU and BG will meet again in a doubleheader beginning Sunday at 1:00pm. The series will conclude Sunday as they meet in their final outing at 1:00pm.
