Athens, Ohio - BG (12-6, 3-1 MAC) ignited a dramatic rally in the ninth, scoring two runs and thus defeating MAC opponent Ohio University (8-12, 1-4 MAC). A true pitchers' duel took place in the Falcon victory, as both Bowling Green senior RHP Craig Menke (9IP, 9K, 3BB) and Ohio's Chuck Lombardy (8.2IP, 5ER, 6K) went practically the entire game. Over 130 pitches later, Menke (3-1) recorded his first complete game of the 2001 campaign. Ohio's Mike Dunn was brought in with two outs in the 9th to relieve Lombardy.
Bowling Green started their scoring in the third inning, as senior CF Aric Christman blasted a 2-run double to left center, scoring both junior C Tim Newell and senior 1B Chad Curlis, both walked on base. Ohio would then score two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth. The fourth inning runs came from Ohio RBI singles as the fifth inning Ohio run was produced by a solo homerun by Adam Fox.
Bowling Green would then score in each of the last three innings to make the comeback. The 7th inning run came from an RBI double by junior SS Nick Elrod and Christman homered in the 8th to score another. Then, in the ninth with two outs, Newell singled to left field, scoring the game-breaking run scored by Elrod. Christman would then knock in Newell to score another. Menke came out again in the ninth and sealed the victory.
Bowling Green will continue their series with Ohio University tommorow at 1:00pm to begin a doubleheader at Bob Wren Stadium. They will conclude the series Sunday at 1:00pm.
