Ball State Squeezes Past Falcons, 4-3

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team lost a nip-and-tuck match to visiting Ball State University Thursday (March 29). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at the Courts of Sylvania.
The win improved BSU's record to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in MAC action, while the Falcons drop to 5-9 and 2-1, respectively.
The Cardinals took the doubles point, a point that would prove to be crucial, by winning at the top-two flights. BGSU's team of senior Tracy Howitt and Lisa Maloney won at the third flight, downing BSU's Darcy Poulos and Alyce Zollman, 9-7.
The other Falcon doubles teams consisted of seniors Erika Wasilewski and Abby Bratton at the top flight, and senior Meghan Rhodes and junior Devon Bissinger at the middle level. The Bratton/Wasilewski tandem lost to BSU's Libby Gerding and Melissa Roach by a 9-8 count.
In singles action, the teams split six matches, with the Cardinals winning at the top-three flights. Each of the top-four levels saw one game decided by a tiebreaker.
Gerding downed Rhodes in a narrow match at the top flight, while Roach topped Bratton at the second level. Wasilewski fell to Shareen Korving at the third flight, in another narrow match.
Bissinger posted a win at the fourth flight, while Maloney and Howitt each won in straight sets at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Howitt has now won seven consecutive singles matches, and her two wins Thursday give her 121 total victories for her career, moving her into a tie for ninth on the BGSU list.
The Falcons continue a six-match homestand with a Saturday (March 31) contest vs. Xavier University. That non-league match is scheduled to begin at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
