BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team (20-8) took care of non-conference opponent Defiance College (7-13) this afternoon at Steller Field, winning their sixth straight. Bowling Green scored early and held their lead for the duration of the game while the Yellow Jackets did not collect their first run until the fifth. Nontheless, the Falcons recorded their 20th win of the 2001 campaign.
Bowling Green scored early in the 2nd inning as freshman DH Nate Henschen blasted a solo home run just one day after hitting his first collegiate home run. Another run scored in the 2nd as freshman 2B Spencer Schmitz knocked in one with an RBI single. He would finish the day with 2 RBI. Sophomore RHP Brett Baumgartner started on the mound for the Falcons, and pitched effectively giving up only three hits in three innings of action.
Three more Falcon runs would score throughout the game, with freshman CF David Barkholz, freshman LF Neil Schmitz, junior RF Len Elias, and Henschen each collecting RBI. Falcon relievers pitched solid innings as well, as four combined members of the relief staff gave up only six hits and two earned runs. Defiance runs came in the 5th and 7th innings respectively, as 3B Mike Morgan hit a runner in with a single. Baumgartner (3-2) was awarded the victory and Defiance starter Eric Sprague (3IP, 7H, 3ER) picked up the loss.
The Falcons begin a six-game road stretch, beginning at 3:00pm tomorrow afternoon against Cleveland State. From there, the Falcons will then travel to Huntington, West Virginia to partake in a four-game conference series against Marshall.
