Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green (21-8) began their road stretch with a victory in Cleveland this afternoon against the Vikings of Cleveland State (11-16). Solid pitching and hitting combined is what sealed the victory for the Falcons today, as they recorded fourteen hits against Cleveland State's five.
The Falcons took an early lead as senior RF Lee Morrison knocked in the first run with an RBI single in the 1st. Then, in the second, senior CF Aric Christman began the inning with a picture perfect bunt down the third base line. Sophomore DH Kelly Hunt tied himself for the lead in team homeruns with seven as he slammed a two-run shot to right-centerfield. Two more runs would then come in the sixth, as sophomore C Justin Haire and junior 2B Nick Schmidt would both collect RBI. A bases-loaded walk in the seventh concluded the final Falcon run.
Cleveland State was hard pressed to score, as their first run did not come until the sixth when Jamie Murphy hit a solo homerun for the Vikings. Freshman LHP Keith Laughlin (3IP, 0H, 2K) started for the Falcons, and pitched a fine three innings, blanking the Vikings and not giving up any hits. He went on to earn the victory and picked up his first collegiate win. Five other freshman Falcon relievers would see time as well, and collectively gave up only two earned runs on five hits.
Bowling Green continues their road stretch in Huntington, West Virginia this Friday as they open up their third MAC series of the year with Marshall. The first game of the series will take place in Huntington at 3:00pm.
