TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team captured wins at five of the six singles flights en route to a 6-1 road win over the arch-rival University of Toledo Saturday (April 14).
With the win, the Falcons are 8-11 overall and 4-3 in Mid-American Conference play heading into the final week of the regular season. The Rockets drop to 6-11 and 0-7, respectively.
The Falcons captured the doubles point by winning at flights two and three. Senior Erika Wasilewski teamed with freshman Lisa Maloney for an 8-4 win at the middle flight, while seniors Tracy Howitt and Meghan Rhodes won by an 8-2 count at the third level.
In singles action, seniors won at the top-three flights for the Brown and Orange. Rhodes won in straight sets over UT's Whitney Wasielewski at the first flights, while Abby Bratton was a winner at the second level. Wasilewski was a third-flight victor for the Falcons.
Maloney and Howitt each won straight-sets matches at flights five and six, respectively. Howitt lost a total of just one game to Anne Tabernik.
With the wins, three Falcons moved ever closer to the top spot on the BGSU career list. Bratton, Rhodes and Wasilewski all have identical totals of 148 wins in their Falcon careers. They are tied for second, just five wins behind school-record holder Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000).
Howitt's two wins give her 125 in her career, moving her into sole possession of eighth place in school history.
Bratton and Rhodes each have 76 career singles wins, just three shy of that school record, held by Deidee Bissinger and Julie Weisblatt [1994-97]). The two are tied for third place, while Wasilewski stands seventh with 74 singles victories.
The Falcons will conclude the regular season with a pair of tough conference road matches, taking on Miami Friday (April 20) and Marshall Saturday (April 21). BG then returns to Marshall for the MAC Championships, April 26-29.
