The Bowling Green State University softball team, after playing just two games last week, should be quite busy this week. The Falcons (17-14 overall, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) will host the University of Detroit Mercy in non-conference action Monday (April 16). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
Following the UDM doubleheader, the Brown and Orange will return to the road for five consecutive MAC games, beginning with a Tuesday (April 17) double-dip against the University of Akron. That twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at UA's Buchtel Field.
BGSU then heads to Buffalo for a three-game weekend series vs. the Bulls. The teams will play a Friday (April 20) single game, beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday (April 21) twinbill at 1:00 p.m. All three games will be played at the UB Softball Stadium.
After this week's five conference road games, the Falcons will play the last nine MAC contests of the regular season at home.
HEAD COACH LEIGH ROSS-SHAW: Leigh Ross-Shaw is in her third season as a collegiate head coach, and has an overall record of 71-59. Ross-Shaw has a Mid-American Conference mark of 35-21 after leading the Falcons to a MAC East Division co-championship last year.
Ross-Shaw assumed the top job after two years as BG's assistant coach. The Ottawa Lake, Mich., native came to the Falcon program in 1996 after serving as a high-school head coach, at Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, for four seasons.
Ross-Shaw, a 1992 graduate of the University of Toledo, still holds numerous UT and MAC records, and remains the all-time conference leader in batting average (.398), at-bats and hits. She hit a MAC-record .447 as a senior en route to All-America Second-Team honors. On February 2, she was inducted into the UT Athletics Hall of Fame.
Amy Kyler is in her third season as Ross-Shaw's assistant. Kyler, quite possibly the top pitcher in Cleveland State history, graduated from CSU in 1997. She played for the Carolina Diamonds of the Women's Pro Softball League for two years, and pitched for the Akron Racers in each of the last two seasons.
THE OPPONENTS: Detroit enters the BGSU twinbill with an overall record of 12-19, and the Titans have a Midwestern Collegiate Conference record of 3-3. Last weekend, UDM split a twinbill at Cleveland State. Earlier in the week, the Titans were swept by Toledo, but swept two games from Northwood. Last season, Detroit was 16-29 overall and 1-11 in the MCC. Head coach Bob Wilkerson has a record of 61-156 in his fifth year as a collegiate head coach, all in Detroit. More information on the team can be accessed at www.detroittitans.com.
Akron has a 15-17 overall mark, and the Zips will bring an 8-5 MAC record into Tuesday's games vs. BGSU. Last weekend, UA won two-of-three games from host Ohio. Akron has played just three games at home this season to date, going 2-1 in a series vs. Miami. Last year, the Zips finished 31-21 overall, and UA was 12-8 in MAC play. The 2001 season marks UB's first as a MAC member for softball. Last year, the Bulls went 7-38 in the team's first season of action since 1987. Head coach Marie Curran is 15-67 in her second year with the Bulls. More information on the team can be accessed at www.buffalobulls.com.
