Toledo, Ohio - Bowling Green (25-10, 12-4 MAC) scored in six of the nine innings of play to hammer in fourteen runs and defeat MAC rival Toledo (19-19, 5-7 MAC) by a score of 14-5 this afternoon at Scott Park. Three different Falcon hitters had three or more hits against UT, and after BG jumped out to an early lead, the Rockets were simply unable to catch up.
After the Falcons scored one in the first, Sophomore 2B Corey Loomis (3-5, 2 RBI) smashed his ninth homerun of the year, a solo shot, in the second inning. In the third inning of play, junior LF Len Elias (4-6, 5 RBI) blasted the second homer of the game for the Falcons, and would go on to hit another. The third homer came in the very next inning as senior CF Aric Christman (2-5, 3RBI) smashed his sixth homerun of the year, knocking in senior 1B Chad Curlis (2-4, 1 RBI) who was on second after ripping a double against the left field wall. The six-run 7th innning was fueled by another Elias homerun, along with back-to-back doubles by senior RF Lee Morrison (3-5, 1 RBI) and Loomis.
Aside from the fifth inning, the Rockets' hitting was shut down for most of the day. Mitch Maier and Andy Stetka homered for the Rockets in that inning, and produced three of their team's five runs in doing so. Sophomore RHP Brett Baumgartner (6.1 IP, 5 ER, 4 SO) started for the Falcons, and collected his fourth win of the season in a fine outing. Falcon relievers also pitched well, as freshmen LHP and RHP David Barkholz and Ryan Lindquist combined to pitch 2 2/3 innings, and giving up zero runs on two hits.
The Falcons will continue the MAC series with the Rockets tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Steller Field. The two teams will then return to Toledo on Sunday to finish up the series with a 2:00 pm contest at Scott Park.
