Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University took game number one of a doubleheader against visiting Oakland on Wednesday afternoon, 14-13.
The Falcons did their damage early in the game, scoring all 14 runs in the first three innings. Outfielder Lee Morrison drove in centerfielder David Barkholz for BGSU's first run of the game in the first inning. Junior Nick Schmidt added to that in the second inning when he belted his first career home run, a two-run shot, to give the home team a 3-0 lead. Junior outfielder Len Elias added a two-run home run of his own in the inning for a 5-0 lead heading into the third inning.
Oakland responded in the top half of the third inning with three runs to cut its deficit to 5-3, but in the home-half BGSU plated nine runs on eight hits. Barkholz knocked in his third and fourth RBIs of the game with a double to left-center field, while Barkholz and Elias (second) homered. First baseman Chad Curlis walked with the bases loaded, bringing in pinch-runner Neil Schmitz, and junior catcher David Viane finished the scoring with a three-run double to right-center field for a 14-3 lead.
The Golden Grizzlies (8-36) scored in their final three at-bats, including six in the fifth inning and two each in the sixth and seventh, to make things interesting. Left-hander Aaron Nease came in with two outs in the seventh inning and recorded the third out for his first collegiate save. Freshman Clayton Booth improved his record to 5-1 with the win.
