Falcons Open Season With Victory Over Vols, 3-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team kicked off the 2001 season with a victory against the University of Tennessee in five games Friday evening (Aug. 31). The match was the first of three for the Falcons to be played as part of the Hoosier Invitational at Assembly Hall.
Tennessee captured the first game by a 30-24 score. Bowling Green answered quickly in game two, winning 30-26. The Vols followed with a 31-29 decision in game three. The Falcons finished off the Vols with a 30-21 triumph in game four and a 19-17 victory in the final game of the match.
The Brown and Orange was led by the seniors, with Caty Rommeck recording a team-high 21 kills in the victory. Rommeck also had a career-high 19 digs. Classmate Natalie Becker led the team with 64 assists and a team-high 21 digs.
Junior Kristin Gamby recorded 17 kills and a team-best two solo blocks in the match, while sophomore Susie Norris had a team-high and career-high six service aces in addition to her 14 kills.
Seniors Kate Yeo, Amber Vorst, Karen Amstutz and Shyann Robinson, sophomores Nadia Bedricky, Sara Sikorski and Laura Twyman, and freshmen Melissa Mohr and Bridget Protas also saw action for the Falcons in the match.
The Falcons had 77 kills and hit .237 as a team, while the Vols had 76 kills and hit .224.
Tennessee, 23-10 and an NCAA Tournament participant a year ago, received votes in the 2001 USA Today/AVCA Division I Preseason Coaches Top 25 poll.
BGSU will continue tournament action on Saturday (Sept. 1), taking on host Indiana at noon CST and meeting the University of Maryland at 4:30 pm CST.
