
Volleyball Wins Hoosier Invitational

Bloomington, IN - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team won their first tournament of the season, defeating host Indiana and the University of Maryland Saturday (Sept.1). The final two games of the tournament were played at noon and 4:30 pm CST, respectively.
In the first game of the day, the Falcons (3-0) defeated Indiana in five games. Bowling Green captured the first game by a 30-22 score, then won the second game by a narrow 34-32 margin. Indiana answered in game three and four, defeating BG by a score of 30-28 and 30-24, respectively. In a strong finish, Bowling Green wrapped up the match with a 15-11 triumph in game five.
The Brown and Orange were led by junior Kristin Gamby's 29 kills, which broke her career-high 26 kills set last October. Senior Caty Rommeck had 27 kills, 16 digs, and two blocks. Kate Yeo led the team with 17 digs, while senior setter Natalie Becker had a team-high 64 assists. Rommeck was named MVP of the event, while Becker also earned all-tournament honors.
The Falcons had 84 kills and hit .252 as a team, while Indiana had 79 kills and a .218 hitting percentage. BG had a team total 10 blocks to Indiana's 7.
In the final match of the tournament, the Falcons rose to the challenge, defeating the Terrapins 3-2 and taking the tournament title. Bowling Green captured games one and two with identical 30-25 scores. Maryland challenged the Falcons, winning games three and four, posting scores of 30-20 and 30-25, respectively. In the final game, Bowling Green clenched the match and the tournament with a score of 15-9.
Leading the victory was senior Caty Rommeck with a career-high 30 recorded kills, as well as 10 digs and two service aces. Setter Natalie Becker led the team with 53 assists, while sophomore Susie Norris had team-high totals of 19 digs and 3 service aces.
Bowling Green had 67 kills in this match, hitting .214, while Maryland had 66 kills and recorded a .206 hitting percentage. The Falcons had a team total of 11 blocks to Maryland's 6.
BGSU will take their 3-0 record back on the road next weekend, competing in the Michigan State Invitational in East Lansing. The Falcons take on University of Idaho and Winthrop on Friday (Sept. 7) and Michigan State on Saturday (Sept. 8). The Brown and Orange will have its first home match on September 11, where they will host the University of Dayton at 7:00 p.m.
