Bowling Green - Bowling Green State University baseball coach Danny Schmitz announced today his official recruiting class for the 2001-02 school year. The Falcons are coming off of a 2001 season that saw them win their third East Division Mid-American Conference title in four years and tie a school record for wins in a season with 36. BGSU led the nation as a team in batting average (.360) and slugging percentage (.599). Bowling Green was third in the country in runs scored after averaging 9.94 per game.
Burke Badenhop, RHP, 6-5, 180, R/R (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) Badenhop was 5-2 on the mound this season for Perrysburg High School, including a complete game two-hitter against Northern Lakes League rival Anthony Wayne in which he struck out nine batters and walked none. The 6-foot-5 right-hander established new school records his senior year in ERA (0.85), earned runs allowed (six), walks allowed (nine) and tied for most strikeouts (65). At the plate, Badenhop batted .290 with three doubles, two triples and eight RBIs. He was a two-year starter for coach Dave Hall on the mound and at shortstop. Badenhop was Perrysburg's Most Valuable Pitcher, Outstanding Senior and received the Yellow Jacket Award for best overall performance. He was also recognized as All-Northern Lakes League. Perrysburg finished the year 23-5, winning the NLL before losing in the sectional championship game. Both of Badenhop's parents attended BGSU, including his father, Dalynn, who played basketball for the Falcons in the early 1970s.
Matt Hundley, RHP/OF, 5-11, 175, R/R (Warren, Ohio/Howland H.S.) He was the first player ever to be selected to the Metro Athletic Conference First Team three years in a row, sophomore through senior years. Hundley was named first-team All-Northwest as a senior after finishing with a 1.88 ERA, 5-2 record and 63 strikeouts on the mound and a .483 batting average at the plate. He also chipped in 24 RBIs, five doubles and five homers. He led his Howland High School team in stolen bases for three years, finishing with 77 steals during that time, including a school-record 31 as a junior. Hundley was the team's MVP as a sophomore and junior and received the Gold Glove Award as a senior, as well as being named co-captain. This past summer, the right-hander pitched five innings in the Mizuno All-Ohio Division I All-Star game in Columbus, Ohio. He lettered four years in baseball and once in basketball while at Howland. His brother, Jeff, played at BGSU from 1996-98 and is currently in the Anaheim Angels organization.
Jim Lipari, SS, 5-11, 180, R/R (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLasalle H.S.) Lipari was a four-year letterwinner at shortstop for Warren DeLasalle High School in baseball, earning All-Catholic League, All-Macomb County and All-Metro Detroit his senior year after batting .396 with 13 doubles and three triples. He was voted as co-captain his senior year and played in the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association East/West All-Star Game at Comerica Park in July. Lipari helped lead his high school team to the Division I State Championship as a junior. In 444 varsity at-bats, Lipari struck out just 39 times.
Kevin Longstreth, C, 6-2, 195, R/R (Wetzel, Ohio/Lincoln View H.S.) Kevin batted .382 as a senior with 33 RBIs, four home runs, eight doubles and 13 stolen bases, earning him a first-team All-Northwest Conference spot for the third year in a row. The catcher lettered all four years for coach Brad Jones behind the plate and was a selected to play in the Mizuno All-Ohio All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio, earlier this summer. Kevin led Lincoln View High School in batting average as a sophomore and junior and helped his team to a runner-up finish in the Northwest Conference this season (15-8). Longstreth also lettered once in golf and three times in basketball, where he was an all-conference performer.
Tom Oestrike, RHP, 6-5, 190, R/R (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock H.S.) Helped lead his team to its first-ever state championship with an 11-5 win in the Division III Michigan State Championship against No. 1-ranked team in Michigan. Oestrike earned the decision in the Regional Semifinal, State Quarterfinal and State Semifinal games. After starting the year 0-3, Oestrike ended the season with eight-straight wins and a save. He threw 92 innings of work with 36 walks, 128 strikeouts and a 1.67 ERA and earned first team accolades on the All-Huron League, All-District, and All-Monroe County Region. The right-hander also batted .411 with 21 RBIs, 20 runs scored, five doubles, one triple and one home run. Flat Rock finished 21-11 overall and rattled off 11-straight victories to win the state title.
Dustin Pearson, C, 6-0, 165, R/R (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton H.S.) Pearson was a three-year starter behind the plate for coach Dan Bowling at Hamilton High School and was named as the Top Defensive Player for his team as a junior and senior. As a senior, Pearson batted .327 with three homers, 24 runs batted in and 10 doubles while Hamilton advanced to the Division I State Semifinals before losing in eight innings to the eventual state champion. In 2001, the 6-footer was the team's co-captain and named first-team All-Greater Miami Conference. As a sophomore, Pearson threw out a school-record 26 runners. He also lettered three years on the Hamilton golf team.
Tyler Saneholtz, RHP, 6-2, 195, R/R (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) Sancholtz helped lead his team to the District Championship game while finishing with an 11-1 record on the mound. The right-hander ended his senior year with 12 complete games, a 1.25 ERA, 102 strikeouts and just 29 walks in 84 innings of work. Offensively, Saneholtz smacked eight home runs and eight doubles, finishing with a .329 batting average and a .729 slugging percentage, along with 27 runs scored. For his efforts, Saneholtz was named to the first-team All-Northern Lakes League and All-District. He was also tabbed as the District Player of the Year and selected to play in the Mizzuna All-Ohio All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio, earlier this summer.
Jayson Selgo, OF, 5-11, 165, B/L (Archibold, Ohio/Archibold H.S.) Selgo was a three-year varsity starter for Archibold High School, seeing time in the outfield, infield and on the pitching mound. In his senior year, Selgo batted .360 with nine doubles, two triples, 25 RBIs and was eight-for-eight in stolen bases. On the mound, he was 5-1 in helping Archibold to a 21-5 record while advancing to the District Championship game, finishing as runners-up. During his three years on the varsity level, Archibold was 59-14 and won three sectional championships and two Northwest Ohio Athletic League titles. Selgo batted .412 as a junior when he was named second-team All-District.
Jeff Warnock, OF, 6-1, 170, L/L (Cincinnati, Ohio/Taylor H.S.) As a senior, Warnock was named Taylor High School's Most Valuable Player and the Cincinnati Hills League Player of the Year after batting .370 at the plate and finishing 9-0 on the mound. The left-hander drove in 21 runs while scoring 28 times for Taylor. Warnock finished with six doubles, three triples and one home run and 12 stolen bases. On the mound, Warnock registered a 2.05 ERA in 58 innings pitched while striking out 67 and walking just 11. Warnock earned the victory in both the Sectional and District Championship games before Taylor lost in the Regional Semi-Final. Warnock helped Taylor to its first Cincinnati Hills League Championship since 1987 and a 25-5 record.
